Latest rules and updates. IndyGo is the largest public transportation provider in Indiana, serving communities across Marion County through local bus, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and paratransit services, with the Julia M. Carson Transit Center (CTC) as the downtown hub. This guide was designed to help everyone share the system safely and respectfully by explaining expectations for rider behavior while on IndyGo buses, and at the CTC, BRT stations or bus stops. Anyone riding an IndyGo bus must have valid fare; for current fares, passes and payment options, visit IndyGo.net and look for the “Fares” section or check posted information at the CTC. Consequences for not Following the Rider Code of Conduct Failure to follow any part of the code of conduct may result in an IndyGo supervisor, security staff or any responding law enforcement agency taking one or more of the following actions. Call 317-635-3344 to report any issues.
‣ Removal from the bus, BRT station or IndyGo property. ‣ Banned from riding IndyGo for the remainder of the service day. ‣ Criminal trespassing, which can lead to being prohibited from riding for up to 365 days, depending on the severity of the offense. ‣ Arrest. Anyone who sees illegal or dangerous behavior, harassment or notices unattended items is highly encouraged to report it to an IndyGo team member immediately by calling 317-6353344. In case of an emergency, please call 911. We also encourage riders to report issues of a less critical nature. Play Fair: Pay Your Fare All riders must pay applicable fare or show valid pass before boarding. Appropriate Clothing Required Wearing shirts, pants or shorts, and shoes are always required. Use Headphones Keep the sound to yourself! Use headphones when watching videos, playing games or talking on the phone. Children MUST Be Supervised Riders traveling with children must supervise those children. No Throwing Objects Do not throw objects from/ at IndyGo property, including buses, the CTC, BRT stations and all bus stops. No Alcohol Drinking alcohol on any IndyGo property is strictly prohibited.
No Violence of Any Kind Assault, battery, fighting, throwing objects, interfering with operators and violent behaviors are prohibited. Violence will be met with immediate removal and punishment. No Weapons or Dangerous Materials Explosives, knives, car batteries, compressed gas bottles and fuel storage containers are strictly prohibited. No Smoking or Vaping In compliance with city ordinances, Smoke Free Air Act 1149, smoking, which includes e-cigarettes and vapes, is prohibited. Reports for smoking in shelters, on a platform or bus may be made to the Marion County Public Health Department at 317-221-2000. No Eating or Open Containers Eating and open drink containers are not permitted. Drinks in closed containers are permitted. If you have a medical condition, please inform the operator or IndyGo staff of your need to eat or drink from an open container while using our services.
Keep it Clear Keep belongings on your lap or between your legs, and don’t store items in or around the CTC. Keep doors, walkways, and seating areas clear, and always make room for wheelchair users. No Bad Behavior Lewd, illegal or disruptive behavior is prohibited, including gambling, panhandling, soliciting, indecent exposure or profanity. No Drugs or Paraphernalia Use, possession, sale or distribution of drugs and drug paraphernalia are not allowed on IndyGo property. No Littering Buses are equipped with trash bags near the operator for your convenience. Waste receptacles are located throughout the CTC, at every BRT station and at many bus stops. Please do not leave trash in your seat, in the aisle or on the ground. No Camping Out Camping or sleeping on IndyGo property is not allowed.
No Bullying or Harassing Behavior Unwelcome, insulting or hurtful behavior is prohibited, including slurs, hate speech, profanity directed at staff or riders, stalking or unwanted physical contact. No Vandalism Vandalism, graffiti, damaging of facilities or equipment is prohibited. No Spitting Spitting is not allowed anywhere on IndyGo property, including busses, the CTC, BRT stations and super stops. No Skateboarding, Rollerblading or Hoverboarding Skating, skateboarding, rollerblading and hover-boarding are not allowed. Rollerblades, skates, skateboards and hoverboards must be dismounted and carried onto the bus and station platforms or into the CTC. Stay Upright No lying down on floors, sidewalks, seats, benches or in waiting areas.
Restroom Only Use facilities and wash hands only. No bathing, shaving, grooming or washing clothes. Performances Performances are allowed with permission from IndyGo staff. To request permission, visit the Care Center Desk or call 317-635-3344. Walk Wise Stay on the designated walking paths in the bay area. Be aware of moving vehicles. No Promotions Soliciting, promotions and sales are not allowed on site.
Staff Only Areas No entering restricted or employee only areas. No Loitering Customers may remain at the CTC only as long as needed to buy fare, wait for a connection, or conduct business with the Care Center Desk. Bike Rack Rules Bikes may not be left on outdoor racks overnight. Bikes left overnight will be removed. No Biking at the CTC Riding a bicycle in or through CTC property is not allowed. The Julia M. Carson Transit Center (CTC) is IndyGo’s transit hub at 201 E. Washington St. It includes restrooms, a lobby and the Care Center Desk, where staff can answer questions and sell fare. Fare is also available at ticket vending machines (TVMs), and route maps are available in the lobby. The following are the CTC rules.
Strollers and Carts Stay with strollers and hand carts. Lock wheels and keep them parallel to the platform edge. Stand Back Wait behind the yellow platform edge until the bus comes to a complete stop.
Use Safe Crossings Only use designated entrance and exit ramps and crosswalks to access station platforms. Edge Off Limits No sitting on the edge of the platform. BRT stations and Super Stop platforms are for use by IndyGo customers only. Riders may remain at these stops only for the time reasonably necessary to purchase fare and wait for connecting buses.
Stay Behind the Line Federal regulations prohibit standing ahead of the yellow or white line near the front of the bus while it is in operation. One Seat Only Use only the space you need. Do not take more than one seat, and do not lie down on seats. Sit If You Can, Hold On If You Stand Use a seat if available. If standing, hold the rails. Bike Storage Use the exterior bike rack on local buses and the interior rack on BRT buses. Small children’s bikes (smaller than a suitcase) may be brought onboard any bus.
Strollers and Luggage Strollers, hand carts and luggage are allowed. Aisles and doorways must remain clear and children must be secured in a stroller. Make Room When Crowded If the bus is crowded, you may be asked to fold and stow strollers or carts under your seat. Riders with an open stroller, cart or luggage, may be asked to wait for the next bus. Priority Seating Front seats are reserved for persons with disabilities, mobility aids, expectant mothers and senior adults. Layover Stays Allowed Except for Route 8, riders are not required to exit during layovers at the end of the line or at the CTC. No Joyriding Riders who complete a full round trip, meaning they’ve arrived back at the stop where they boarded, must exit the bus. Emergency Procedures In an emergency, follow operator instructions. Stay Inside Keep all body parts inside the bus at all times.
