INDIANAPOLIS – IndyGo and the City of Indianapolis announce the new Veteran Fare Cards, allowing veterans to ride IndyGo fixed route service fare-free. The effort to provide veterans with free access to the transit system has been championed by several veteran service organizations and Indianapolis leaders.
“I’m delighted that we are working together to offer an efficient solution for veterans,” said Councillor Kreider. “Free fares for transit will enhance veterans’ access to amenities and employment opportunities.”
To register, veterans must complete the enrollment process in person at the Julia Carson Transit Center, 201 E Washington St. Veterans must fill out an application (provided in both English and Spanish), provide proof of eligibility, and have a photo taken at the Transit Center Customer Service desk.
“This an exciting moment for the City of Indianapolis and our veterans, as they will now be able to better navigate their lives with the freedom they fought to protect,” said Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett. “Together, we are making a statement that Indianapolis is a welcoming place for America’s heroes – and thanks to our continued efforts as One City, we can be sure that Indianapolis will remain a welcoming home for our United States veterans for generations to come.”
To prove veteran status IndyGo will accept:
– Valid Government Issued photo ID and DD 214 Certificate of Release/Discharge from Active Duty
or
– Valid US Department of Veterans Affairs ID
“IndyGo is driven to honor those who have served,” said IndyGo Board of Directors President, Danny Crenshaw. “We feel it is our duty to help provide access for veterans who protect the freedoms that we enjoy and at times take for granted. This will help improve their health, wellbeing, and self-sufficiency.”
The free fare program will provide unlimited access to IndyGo’s fixed route bus network, but will not include paratransit (Open Door) service. Initial cards are $2.00 and replacement cards cost $5.00. Veterans may complete the enrollment process at the Transit Center’s Customer Service Desk weekdays 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturdays 9:00 a.m. to noon.
“I’m thankful for the leadership Mayor Hogsett, Councillor Kreider, Julie Fidler, Matt Hall, Don Hawkins, and IndyGo have demonstrated in developing the Veterans Fare Card program,” said Council President Vop Osili. “It’s a small but important way for the City to recognize, every day, the sacrifices our veterans have made.”
Cards are non-transferable and must be swiped at fare box on-board. Other forms of eligibility will not be accepted on the bus. To access the program, veterans must obtain the IndyGo-issued fare card.
