Downtown Super Stops Project

IndyGo is upgrading some of its busiest downtown bus stops. The project is called “Super Stops,” and it brings the comfort, convenience and reliability of Bus Rapid Transit to our local fixed route service. To enhance local service in the downtown area and to accommodate the Transit Plan’s increased frequencies, IndyGo will be constructing eight total “Super Stops” in two phases. Phase 1 opened for service in October 2022.

Enhanced Rider Experience

Super Stops consist of enhanced waiting areas, ticket vending machines, near-level boarding and bus shelters. A 20-foot shelter will extend covered seating to allow for more riders to comfortably wait for the bus while being shielded from rain, snow, etc. A raised platform about 9-inches high will provide near-level boarding to allow riders to more easily get on and off the bus without a huge step. Ticket vending machines will allow riders to buy fare or reload their MyKey card onsite without having to visit the Carson Transit Center.

Improved Efficiency

Space for two buses on the 90-foot platform keeps the high volume of buses from multiple routes moving efficiently through the stop, making it so riders can quickly access their specific bus without additional wait times. This will accommodate increased frequencies planned for local route improvements in the downtown area.

Roadway Improvements

The first phase in partnership with City of Indianapolis’ Department of Public Works consisted of a full reconstruction of Delaware Street between Maryland and Vermont streets and resurfacing between Vermont Street and Fort Wayne Avenue, including the removal of the below-ground streetcar tracks. The second phase consists of resurfacing between Senate Avenue and Pennsylvania Street, along with Fort Wayne Avenue from Alabama to New Jersey streets.

From 2021 to 2022, IndyGo and the City of Indianapolis’ Department of Public Works partnered to implement significant improvements to Delaware Street and Fort Wayne Avenue. The project consisted of a full reconstruction of Delaware Street between Maryland and Vermont streets and resurfacing between Vermont Street and Fort Wayne Avenue, including the removal of the below-ground streetcar tracks. Furthermore, the project implemented the first phase of Super Stops, an improvement to local public transit services in the city center. One Super Stop was constructed at the intersection of New York and Delaware streets and another at the intersection of North and Delaware streets. Super Stops in this phase consist of enhanced waiting areas, ticket vending machines, security cameras, real-time signs, near-level boarding and bus shelters.

A Bus-And-Turn (BAT) lane was implemented on the right-hand travel lane along Delaware Street, adjacent to the parking lane. This lane improves travel time and reliability for transit riders. Finally, the project converted Fort Wayne Avenue between Pennsylvania Avenue and Alabama Street from a one-way to a two-way street, in part to allow for additional overlapping local routes to utilize the Super Stop at North Street.

These Super Stops will serve current routes:

  • New York and Delaware Super Stop: Routes 2, 4, 5, 10, 38 and 19
  • Delaware and North Super Stop: Routes 2, 4, 5, 10 and 19

IndyGo was awarded a Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Bus and Bus Facilities Grant in early 2022 that will go toward constructing the six remaining Super Stops:

  • Southwest corner of Alabama Street and North Street
  • Northwest corner of Alabama Street and New York Street
  • Fort Wayne Avenue and 9th Street (both directions)
  • Vermont Street and Capitol Avenue (both directions)

Construction of these Super Stops is anticipated to begin in early 2023 with being open for service in late 2023.

Work is intended to take less than three weeks at each super stop location. Construction activities will proceed sequentially through downtown, starting with Stops 7 & 8 on Vermont Street, moving to Stops 2 & 4 on Alabama Street and ending with Stops 5 & 6 on Fort Wayne Avenue.
